East Kildonan had been settled far earlier, with the Kildonan name coming from the Scottish Red River Settlement, but the housing that stands today is overwhelmingly post-war. It became a city in its own right in 1957 with about 20,000 residents.
It also has a small distinction in the Unicity story: East Kildonan was the only suburban municipality that actually favoured amalgamation, while the others resisted it.
