The Wall Behind the Stucco
Stucco is not waterproof and was never meant to be. It is a mineral finish that sheds most water, absorbs some, and dries back out. The assembly behind it is what actually keeps the building dry.
That means a moisture barrier over the sheathing, lapped so water runs down and out rather than in. It means metal lath fastened into structure at the right spacing, giving the scratch coat something to key into. And it means flashing at every opening and termination, so water reaching those points gets directed back out of the wall.
Get that right and the stucco lasts decades. Get it wrong and the finish is irrelevant, because the failure will be behind it.
Three Coats, and Why Each One Matters
Traditional stucco is built in three passes. The scratch coat is pressed into the lath and scored while green so the next coat can grab it. The brown coat brings the wall to plane, and this is where the flatness of the finished elevation is decided. The finish coat carries the texture and colour.
Each coat has to cure before the next. That is not a scheduling preference, it is how the material gains strength. Compressing the schedule to finish a job faster shows up as cracking in the first year.
Choosing the System
Cementitious stucco is hard, breathable, and repairable, which matters over a long life. Acrylic systems are more flexible and hold colour longer, but are less breathable and are repaired differently.

How long does new stucco last?
A properly installed cementitious wall commonly outlasts several rounds of siding on a comparable house. What decides it is not the stucco but the assembly behind it, and whether water that gets in has a way back out. Well-built walls last decades.
