Stucco Repair in Winnipeg

Cracks, hollow spots and failed patches fixed properly, with the texture matched so the repair does not advertise itself.

Cracked stucco does not stay a cosmetic problem for long. Once a crack is open, water gets behind the coat, and a Winnipeg winter turns that water into a wedge. Winnipeg Stucco Works repairs stucco across the city, and repair is the largest part of what we do.

What Causes Stucco to Fail Here

Winnipeg sits on heavy clay that takes on water and gives it back seasonally. The ground under a house does not sit still, and the building moves with it. Stucco is a rigid finish on a moving structure, so that movement shows up as cracking, usually at the corners of window and door openings, where the wall is weakest.

Freeze-thaw does the rest. Water sitting in a hairline crack expands as it freezes and levers the crack a little wider, and the cycle repeats through the shoulder seasons. A crack that was cosmetic in September is often structural by spring.

The other common failure is a bond failure. When the coat separates from the substrate behind it, the wall sounds hollow when tapped. That one cannot be patched over. The loose material has to come off first.

How We Approach a Repair

Every quote starts with sounding the wall to find out how far the problem actually goes. A crack you can see is frequently smaller than the debonded area around it, and quoting only the visible damage is how a repair fails a year later.

From there the work is straightforward: cut back to sound material, key the edges so the new coat has something to hold, build up in coats rather than filling in one pass, then work the finish to match the existing texture. Sand float, dash, knockdown and worm finishes all behave differently under the trowel, and matching one is the difference between a repair and a patch.

We handle both cementitious and acrylic stucco. They are not interchangeable (acrylic moves more and takes a different repair approach), so identifying which one is on your wall comes first.

Repair, Re-Stucco, or Parge

Not every wall needs the same answer. Localized cracking is repair work. A wall where the coat has failed broadly is a re-stucco job, and pretending otherwise wastes your money. Damage at the base of the wall, below grade level, is usually parging repair rather than stucco at all.

We will tell you which one you are looking at, in writing, before anything starts. If a repair will hold, that is what we quote. A bigger job is not a better job when the smaller one solves the problem.

Stucco Repair Questions

Can a stucco crack be repaired, or does the whole wall need redoing?

Most cracks are repairable. Hairline crazing and single straight cracks are routine patch work. A full re-stucco only becomes the better option when the coat has separated from the substrate over a large area, or when patching would leave the wall looking like a quilt.

Will the repair be visible?

A patch is only as good as the texture match. We work the finish to match the surrounding wall and colour-match the coat, which on most walls makes the repair very hard to pick out. On a sun-faded wall, an exact colour match is harder, and we will tell you upfront if painting the elevation afterward is the better result.

How do I know if the problem is the stucco or the wall behind it?

Tap it. Stucco that is still bonded sounds solid. A hollow or drummy sound means the coat has let go of the substrate underneath. We check that before quoting, because skimming a fresh coat over a failed substrate just buys you a year.

When can stucco be repaired in Winnipeg?

Cementitious work needs temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so the season generally runs from spring through fall. We book repair work through that window and quote year-round.
