When Replacement Is the Right Call
Most walls do not need this. Localized cracking and a few hollow spots are stucco repair, and quoting a full replacement for that would be selling you a job you do not need.
What genuinely calls for replacement is a coat that has failed broadly, so much of it debonded that patching means covering the wall in repairs that will never visually resolve. The other case is a failure behind the stucco. If water has been getting past the moisture barrier, or the lath has corroded, the stucco is a symptom. Recoating over that hides the problem and guarantees a repeat.
What the Work Involves
The old coat comes off back to the sheathing so the wall can actually be inspected. This is where the real assessment happens, and it is why a re-stucco quote before tear-off carries assumptions in it.
The moisture barrier is checked and replaced where it has failed. Lath is inspected and refastened or replaced. Only then does new stucco go on, in three coats: a scratch coat keyed into the lath, a brown coat that levels the wall, and a finish coat carrying the texture and colour.
Each coat needs its own cure time. Rushing that is how a new wall cracks in its first year.
Cementitious or Acrylic
Traditional cementitious stucco is hard, breathable and long-lived, and it is what is on most older Winnipeg houses. Acrylic finishes are more flexible, hold colour better, and resist hairline cracking, at the cost of being less breathable.

How do I know if I need a re-stucco instead of a repair?
Two things push a wall past repair. The first is extent. When enough of the coat has debonded that the patches would outnumber the original wall, replacement costs less than chasing it. The second is what is behind the stucco. If the moisture barrier or lath has failed, no amount of surface work fixes it, because the problem is not the stucco.
Can you re-stucco one elevation instead of the whole house?
Yes, and it is common. South and west walls take the most weather and often fail first. The consideration is appearance, since a new coat beside a thirty-year-old one will not match even in the same colour. Often the answer is re-stucco the failed elevation and coat the rest to bring it together.
What is under stucco?
On most Winnipeg houses, a moisture barrier over the sheathing, then metal lath, then three coats of stucco. The barrier and the lath are the parts nobody sees and the parts that decide how long the wall lasts.
How long does a re-stucco take?
