What the System Is
Traditional stucco is a heavy mineral coating on lath. EIFS is a layered assembly: insulation board fixed to the wall, a thin reinforced base coat with fibreglass mesh worked into it, and an acrylic finish coat on top.
The result is thinner and far lighter than cementitious stucco, and it puts a continuous layer of insulation outside the structure. On a Winnipeg house, that continuous layer is the real argument for it. Insulation between studs still loses heat through every stud, and in a climate with this many heating degree days, interrupting those bridges is worth something measurable.
Drainage Is the Whole Question
EIFS earned a bad name in some markets, and the reason is worth being precise about.
Early systems were barrier systems: the face was expected to keep all water out, with no path for anything that got past it. Water always gets past eventually, at a window head, a penetration, a failed sealant joint. With nowhere to go, it sat in the wall.
Modern EIFS is drained. There is a drainage plane behind the insulation and a way for water to exit at the base. Detailing at openings, terminations and penetrations is what makes that work, and it is where an installation is won or lost.
We install drained systems and detail them accordingly. If you are looking at an older barrier-type wall, that is worth knowing before deciding whether to repair or replace it.
Repairs to Existing Synthetic Walls
Impact damage is the common call, since the surface is thin and not hard. A cut-out repair replaces the insulation, laps new mesh into the existing reinforcement, and rebuilds the coats.
Matching an aged finish is the same challenge as on any stucco: the wall has weathered and the new material has not. We will be straight about how close a match is achievable and whether coating the elevation afterward gives the better result.

What is EIFS?

Is EIFS the stuff that caused problems?
Early barrier-type EIFS earned a poor reputation in some markets because water that got past the face had no route out, and the wall behind it stayed wet. Modern systems are drained by design, with a drainage plane behind the insulation. The distinction between a barrier system and a drained one is the whole story.
Why insulate on the outside?
Because it covers the framing too. Insulation between studs leaves every stud as a thermal bridge. A continuous layer outside the structure interrupts those, which is why exterior insulation performs better than its nominal R-value suggests.
Can EIFS be repaired?
Yes. Damaged sections are cut out, the insulation replaced, and base and finish coats rebuilt with the mesh lapped into the surrounding reinforcement. Matching an aged finish coat is the harder part, as it is with any stucco repair.
