What Good Parging Requires
The coat is only as good as the surface under it. Concrete cures with a smooth, sometimes dusty face that gives a cement coat very little to hold, which is why parging applied straight onto untreated concrete so often lets go in sheets.
Preparation is the difference. The wall is cleaned of dust, form release and anything loose, dampened so it does not pull the water out of the fresh mix, and treated with a bonding agent where the surface is tight. Block foundations need their joints addressed first, since a coat bridging an open joint will crack along it.
The coat then goes on at a consistent thickness. Where parging fails prematurely, it is usually either a bond problem or a thickness problem, and both are decided before any material is mixed.
Finish and Appearance
Parging can be finished smooth, lightly textured, or worked to a heavier texture. Smooth reads more contemporary and shows imperfection more readily. A light texture hides the irregularity of an older foundation and is the usual choice on rubble stone and older block.

Where the Coat Meets Everything Else
The top edge, where parging meets siding or stucco, is the detail that decides whether water runs off the wall or behind it. A coat feathered to nothing there has no strength and breaks away early, taking the joint with it.
The bottom edge matters as much. Parging carried below grade and buried in soil stays wet, and that is a short life. There is a right relationship between the coat and the ground line, and getting it wrong shortens the job by years.

What does parging actually do?
It gives exposed foundation a finished, uniform surface and a wearing layer that takes the weather instead of the concrete taking it directly. On block foundations it also closes up the joints. It improves how the house looks from the street more than most people expect.
Is parging waterproofing?
No, and this is worth being clear about. Parging is a surface coat. Below-grade waterproofing is a separate system applied to the outside of the foundation before backfill. Anyone selling parging as a fix for a wet basement is selling you the wrong thing.
Can parging be done on a rubble stone foundation?
Yes, and older Winnipeg homes often have exactly that. The irregular surface actually gives the coat good mechanical grip. The work is in preparing it properly and building enough thickness to level the face without the coat becoming too thick to hold.
What time of year can parging be done?
It needs above-freezing temperatures to cure, so the season generally runs spring through fall. Late-season work is possible when conditions allow, but we would rather book it properly than rush a coat that cures badly.
